HazMat Endorsement Checklist
Pass a HazMat Course
This new requirement went into effect in February of 2022 and requires ALL drivers seeking a HazMat (H) Endorsement to complete a HazMat Theory Training Course.
The course must be administered by a Training Provider Registry (TPR) partner and submitted to the FMCSA for approval BEFORE heading to your local licensing branch to take the written exam.
Undergo a TSA Background Check
Next, schedule an appointment at an application center.
Required Documents for TSA appointment:
TSA Background Check Fees will also be due at the time of your appointment. New applicant fees are $86.50, and the new applicant reduced rate is $41. After a TSA background check is completed and paid, it is valid for 5 years before it will need renewal.
Pass the DMV Written Exam
After completing the requirements above, you will then be ready to head to your local licensing office to sit for the HazMat written exam.
Depending on your state, you must pass the HazMat test with a score of 80 or higher. The test is around 30 questions long, so at least 24 questions need to be answered correctly to pass.
