How to Get an Ohio Class B CDL

Looking to obtain a Class B CDL in Ohio? We have created this step-by-step guide to walk you through the CDL Class B process. Below are the steps to take to get started.

  • Obtain a Department of Transportation (DOT) physical from a registered physician
  • Obtain a Commercial Learner’s Permit (CLP) by passing the General Knowledge and Air Brake tests at your local Ohio BMV.
  • Enroll in a Class B training school that is ELDT compliant
  • Take a skills test at an approved state testing facility. The skills test will consist of a pre-trip inspection, air brake check, backing skills, and a road trip test
  • Skills test results are electronically transmitted to the state database

Note: A driver must wait 14 days after a Commercial Learner's Permit (CLP) is issued to be able to take a state skills test. We recommend obtaining your Class B CLP prior to starting our 14-day training course to avoid any delays in completing your training and final skills testing.

  • 2Shortened Training

Class B CDL training is just two weeks, which is significantly shorter than Class A training. You can also save money by completing your first week of training from home, eliminating the need to commute or pay for lodging near a training campus. Completing your first week online is not mandatory, but it is a great way to reduce time on campus for behind-the-wheel instruction.

  • 3Class B CDL Training Costs

Class B training costs explained: At C1, our Class B CDL program fees cover both the 2-week ELDT-compliant training program and also multiple attempts at the final state skills test. C1 will schedule your skills test with a state-approved testing site, eliminating long wait times. Many Class B students choose to pay their own school fees, which essentially makes them a "free agent" and able to choose their employer. Some Class B employers may offer tuition reimbursement or help cover the upfront costs of training.

  • 4Class B Experience Qualifications

No experience is needed to get started with your CDL Class B, and there are plenty of job opportunities that hire new drivers. Class B is a great introduction to the commercial driving industry.

New drivers must be at least 18 years of age to obtain a Class B. (Specific endorsements may have other qualifications.)

Understanding Class B ELDT Requirements

  • ELDT or Entry-Level Driver Training requirements were put in place for anyone obtaining a Class B CDL for the first time. This new training regulation was federally mandated in February of 2022 to ensure all new drivers are given the same standard of training. Class B training providers must be approved and registered on the FMCSA's Training Provider Registry (TPR).

  • The 2-week class B training is broken into two parts:

    • 1-week classroom training
    • 1-week skills training
  • To help shorten the time spent at school, new drivers may complete the ELDT course for Class B ahead of time online. This can save up to one week of on-site training.
