As of February 7, 2022, all drivers seeking a CDL for the first time must meet new entry-level driver training (ELDT) requirements before continuing on with skills training. In this Class A CDL ELDT guide, we will walk you through the new steps that are required to obtain a Class A or Class B CDL and meet ELDT Requirements.
IMPORTANT: Understanding Class A ELDT Requirements
Many people are unaware of the Entry Level Driver Training (ELDT) requirements. Don't be turned away at the WYDOT Driver Services until you know both the classroom and CDL skills training requirements have been completed.
What is Class A Theory?
The new ELDT Theory Training regulation went into effect in February of 2022 to ensure all new drivers are given the same standard of training on a federal level. ELDT or Entry-Level Driver Training mandates were implemented for anyone obtaining a Class A CDL for the first time; current CDL Class A holders are excused. Class A training must be completed by an FMCSA-approved training program that is registered with the Training Provider Registry (TPR). New drivers will need to complete the Class A Theory ELDT course (also good for Class B) before they can continue with CDL skills training.
After completing the steps above, you can sit for the CDL skills test. The Skills test includes pre-trip inspection, basic control skills, and driving test, and will be taken at a CDL or 3rd party-approved test site.
